WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A DENTAL NURSE?
12 November 2021
Lizzie is our Dental Implant Nurse, we wanted to share with you her inside knowledge of being a dental nurse and how she got to where she is today. For anyone who is thinking about going into nursing, this blog is great insight!
BEFORE DENTAL NURSING
Before working in the dental industry, I was a carer for 6 years. I worked in home care with people who suffered from learning disabilities.
I fell into the dental industry, a friend of mine who worked as a nurse told me how amazing it was working as a dental nurse; she posted an advert for a training course in dental nursing which I applied for and haven't looked back since.
DENTAL NURSING TRAINING
I completed my training with Learn Direct; my course was based all in practice. Starting in Bridlington at MyDentist I then finished my course in Wakefield. In total my training was supposed to take 2 years but I completed it in 14 months. Once fully qualified I worked in Sandal Dental Care Private Dentist for a few years and then I thought I would try my hand at sales, selling clear aligner orthodontic treatment.
I decided to move my career forwards into implant dentistry and completed my qualifications in dental impression taking / dental photography / IPRF (i.e. blood taking) / Dental Implantology / Sedation / Blue Sky Bio Digital Implantology. I have also been a mentor and trained dental nurse's throughout the last 6 years which is a very rewarding aspect of my job role.
SMILE DESIGNS IMPLANT STUDIO
Fast-forwarding to 2020 I started working at Smile Designs Implant Studio and it has been fantastic. Not only for my career but for my confidence as a dental nurse. Having been exposed to multiple avenues that I would not normally be exposed to. I now have a vast knowledge that I would not have got in normal practice. The clinic is just one part of the business, other aspects are an in-house laboratory, education facility and an implant supply company. All these areas mean that I have been able to grow and better myself in my career. It also means that there are multiple avenues available for me to progress into.
The best thing about working at Smile Designs Implant Studio is having a boss (Dr David Veige) that is very knowledgeable and is more like a mentor than an employer, also the Smile Designs team is like my second family to me which is why I travel 26 miles to get to work every day, I wouldn’t change it and I wouldn’t travel that far if I didn’t love where I worked and who I worked with.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A DENTAL NURSE?
It is an enjoyable career; I feel like every day is a different day always progressing and learning something new and very rewarding to see how we have changed peoples lives. I won’t sugar coat it, some days are full-on and quite tiring, but the positives outweigh the negatives 100 to 1.
My greatest achievements while working in the dental industry are all the courses that I have completed, I have not stuck with normal dentistry and instead, I have pushed myself and moved up into more specialised dentistry and clinical lead which has helped me with my career.
ADVICE FOR ANYONE WANTING TO BECOME A DENTAL NURSE
For anyone thinking about becoming a dental nurse; I’d advise them to get into nursing, do general dentistry for a few years and then expand knowledge through courses. E.g impression taking/fluoride application and then to go to the bigger stages of radiography/blood taking/implantology
For any dental nurses out there who would like to become an implant dental nurse; I would advise you to push yourself and progress further as implant dentistry is very interesting and life-changing to people. It’s interesting because it’s a very specialised treatment. For the nurse, they go on the full journey with the patient from start to finish which is incredibly rewarding.
For anyone who is wanting to be an implant dental nurse, we have an education facility. Smile Designs will be holding an implant dental nurse course in 2022
